Papaya sits on the sunset-facing side of Gili Air, a few minutes by bike from the harbour. Sun loungers, beanbags and low bamboo lounges are scattered across the sand right at the water's edge, looking out over the moored boats.
Lunch from noon is Mediterranean in style, with sharing platters and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. From 6pm the beachfront barbecue fires up for lobster, fresh fish, meats and skewers. Cocktails, mocktails and fresh juices are served all day, and a relaxed soundtrack plays in the background rather than a full DJ programme.
It suits couples and friends after a long, slow beach day ending with sunset and a seafood dinner. There is no pool, as the sea in front is the draw. Reservations through WhatsApp are recommended for sunset and dinner. Gili Air has no cars, so walk, cycle or take a cidomo (horse cart) to get here.
